主讲人简介:

Dr. Ishii is an Associate Professor in the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate, as well as the BioTechnology Institute at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. The goal of his research is to solve various environmental problems by applying microbiology and biotechnology approaches. His recent research specifically focuses on (1) the bioremediation of nutrient pollution, (2) the ecology of pathogens and antibiotic resistant bacteria in soil and water, and (3) microbiomes in response to environmental changes. His research group uses multiple approaches to answer fundamental and applied scientific questions, including microbiological, analytical, molecular biological, omics technologies, and engineering approaches. His research appeared in top journals in the research field including the ISME Journal, Microbiome, Environmental Science & Technology, Water Research, etc. Dr. Ishii has more 130 SCI papers with more than 8000 citations. Dr. Ishii is a recipient of the Young Investigator Award from the Japanese Society for Microbial Ecology in 2015 and the 3M Nontenured Faculty Award in 2018. He is also a senior editor of the Microbes and Environment journal and the editorial board of Applied and Environmental Microbiology journal.

Abstract

My research group developed a novel high-throughput tool to simultaneously quantify multiple waterborne pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes. By using this tool as well as a high-throughput sequencing approach, we have clarified the ecology of pathogens (e.g., Campylobacter, Arcobacter) in various freshwater environments such as stormwater reuse systems and a lake populated with migratory geese. These results can be used to establish strategies to protect public health and mitigate pathogen pollution in aquatic environments.
